In the mist-laden land of Morvyr, where twilight eternally draped the sky in hues of lavender and indigo, there existed a breed of mythical creatures known as the Death-Dogs. These spectral hounds were revered and feared, for they were not mere legends, but an integral thread in the tapestry of Morvyr’s existence.
The Death-Dogs originally emerged from the Veil—the ethereal boundary between the realm of the living and the dead—many eons ago. Stories whispered by the ancients spoke of their first appearance during the Night of Sorrow, a cataclysmic event when the balance between life and death wavered, and the souls of the departed wandered lost and aimless. The Veil, responding to the world’s desperate need, birthed the Death-Dogs as guardians of this sacred boundary.
Unlike any ordinary beast, these creatures possessed coats that shimmered with an ever-changing spectral glow, ranging from moonlit silver to deep abyssal black. Their eyes shone like twin lanterns guiding souls through the darkness, and their howl was said to be both a melancholic dirge and a call to the lost spirits seeking passage.
In Morvyr, the Death-Dogs were not merely feared specters but honored emissaries of Elaria, the goddess overseeing life’s ceaseless cycle. Her temple, nestled atop the cliffs of Elys, stood as a beacon where the hounds would gather at the cusp of each season’s end. Here, the priests and priestesses, draped in silver-gray robes, would perform the Rite of Passing, invoking Elaria's blessing upon the Death-Dogs. They offered ambrosial herbs and ethereal flowers that the hounds consumed to renew their strength—each petal and leaf absorbed into their luminous forms.
Among the rites, the Moonlit Tryst was the most revered; performed only once in a decade when the twin moons of Morvyr eclipsed simultaneously. At this convergence, the Death-Dogs escorted the souls of the departed through the Veil, guiding them to their destined afterlife. It was a time of solemn celebration, the mournful and joyous melodies of haunting flutes and echoing drums filling the air.
Villages across Morvyr told tales of personal encounters with these guardians. It was said that when death shadowed a home, a Death-Dog might appear at the doorstep, a silent sentinel.
